Women's
consultations on Financing for Development Engendering the Financing
for Development Agenda
In 2000 Women's
Environment and Development Organization, WEDO, called on representatives
from women organizations and network to participate and be active
in the preparatory process for the High Level Event on Financing
for Development (FfD). WEDO arranged panels at the
Civil Society hearings in New York November 2000 and invited
women activists from around the world to contribute at the hearings.
WEDO continued their efforts
by organizing the women caucus at the second preparatory
committee meeting of the FfD in February 2001. At this PrepCom
WEDO in partnership with UNIFEM also invited women organizations
worldwide to a special Women's Consultation in order to strategize
together on the issues at stake on the Financing for Development
agenda. Some 30 representatives of women's organizations from
around the world spent the day mapping out ways to bring a feminist
perspective to the FfD process. Read more in
WEDO's News & Views .
UNIFEM adviser on Financing
for Development introduced the session by presenting her paper
"Gender Dimensions of the Financing for Development Agenda".
The consultation ended with different groups and individuals
taking responsibility for making a gender analysis of six agenda
themes of the
UN Secretary General's report . As a result of this work
and a consultative process a
Women's Consultation Recommendations paper was presented
at the 3. PrepCom in May, New York.
The Women's Consultation fora was created with the active participation
of many women organizations, networks and individuals around
the world. WEDO opened a Women's Consultation e-mail list and
also continuously published statements and papers on their website
- see www.wedo.org.
